There are moments in our lives when God needs to remind us in a fresh way that we are not forgotten. He draws close to reassure us that he really does see us, and he knows us by name. We are not anonymous faces in the crowd, and as much as life may tell us otherwise, he has not lost track of who we are. He knows what is going on with us.
When we belong to Jesus, no sin or mistake has the power to remove us from his loving gaze. Those things have already been dealt with. We are adopted children, and our Father wants us to know that we are known. We are not forgotten.
I love these beautiful reminders that the LORD gives his people in the Old Testament. They are words that God has used at various points in my life to comfort and reassure me too. He knows each of his rescued people by name and we are his. We are carved into his hands, and he will never leave us or forget us.
“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast
and have no compassion on the child she has borne?
Though she may forget,
I will not forget you!
See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;
your walls are ever before me.” (Isaiah 49:15-16)
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.” (Isaiah 43:1-2)
