Are you a church who likes to mix things up a bit, especially on an all-age service? God really loves creativity, so go for it! But please remember those of us who struggle with anxiety.
If you are going to get people into groups or teams, or ask your congregation to play games, please do keep us in mind. The sentence “If you don’t feel comfortable joining in, that’s absolutely fine!” goes a long, long way. Never assume that we understand we can opt out if you haven’t spelled it out to us, it might be our first ever Sunday at your church. It also really helps if you can explain the full activity before we have to get stuck in, so we know what we’re letting ourselves in for. And it helps if that explanation is ahead of time, so that we have time to come up with a coping strategy. And remember that anything loud and chaotic can be really intense for those of us who struggle with anxiety!
Thanks for loving your anxious brothers and sisters.
“Now concerning brotherly love you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another, for that indeed is what you are doing to all the brothers…but we urge you, brothers, to do this more and more.”
(1 Thessalonians 4:9-10)
